The University of Cincinnati is a coeducational public research university, located in Cincinnati, as its name suggests, which is the county seat of Hamilton County, in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of more than 333, 300 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 3rd largest city in the state. In the same year, the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area had a population of more than 2 million people, making it the largest MSA in Ohio, and the 24th most populous in USA.
UC, as the university is also known, traces its roots back in 1819, with the founding of Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio, which were funded by local benefactors such as Dr. Daniel Drake and William Lytle of the Lytle family. The establishment of the university was made in 1870, by absorbing Cincinnati College, the Medical College of Ohio being used to form the Ohio-Miami Medical Department of the University of Cincinnati, in 1909.
Since it first opened its doors to students, UC consistently grew, having today an enrollment of approximately 40 000 students, being one of the 100 largest universities in the U.S., offering nearly 600 programs of study that range from two-year Associate’s degrees to doctoral and post-doctorate education. In addition to the high rankings granted over the years, regarding its educational programs, UC’s campus has been also recognized, by campus planners and architects, as one of the most distinguished campus settings in the world.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the Cincinnati Bearcats, who compete in NCAA’s Division I Big East Conference, since July 2005, formerly competing in Conference USA, in which the university was a founding member. The Bearcats have experienced victory, in many of their sports, over the years, among their most notable achievements being the victory reached in the NCAA national championship in basketball, in 1961 and 1962, both times competing against Ohio State. They also won 4 National Championships, in dance, from 2004 through 2006, including in 2009, being the first team in UC history to ever capture three consecutive national titles.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Stanley Rossiter Benedict - inventor of ‘’Benedicts Reagent’’, Abe Bookman - inventor of the Magic 8-Ball, George Clooney - Academy Award winning actor, Michael J. Fister - President and CEO of Cadence Design Systems, Inc., Mary Wineberg - 2008 Olympic Gold medalist, 4x400m relay, Sandy Koufax - Hall of Fame baseball pitcher, and Ronald Howes, inventor of the Easy-Bake Oven, among others.
